Al Borges, former Auburn assistant, makes case for why Tigers should claim 2004 title
Al Borges was Auburn’s offensive coordinator back in 2004 when the Tigers felt they were wrongly denied a chance to compete for the BCS national championship.
Instead, USC beat Oklahoma in the title game. But, USC eventually had to vacate that title, and Borges thinks someone else — Auburn — should claim it.
During a debate on “The Paul Finebaum Show” this week, Borges explained his case (via On3 Sports):
“Whether people want to admit it or not, the game the year before did have a little effect,” said Borges. “And we were a completely different team, that’s an unfair analogy, but I think that might have had a little bit to do with it. But SC kind of eliminated themselves with their problems, and that’s really the case that (Tommy Tuberville) makes is: SC’s not even a factor because they supposedly caught their hand in the cookie jar.
“So who’s the best team now? Honestly speaking, I don’t – with all due respect to Oklahoma – Oklahoma did not match up well with SC. I don’t believe Oklahoma could have beat us but I don’t believe SC could have beat us, it doesn’t matter. And Utah was the other one, and I don’t think they could’ve beat us either so why would you vacate a championship when you have a champion. We won every single game, we did not have any recruiting violations. We had no issues.
“Did Reggie Bush’s playing for USC, is that the difference in 55-19, I don’t know. Maybe it is, but I doubt it. So we should be the national champions. I see no rational reason why we shouldn’t be. But you know, my version is a little slanted. To leave the 2004 championship vacated when there should have been, when there is a champion, I think is absurd. But I don’t make that call.”
That’s certainly an interesting argument! We’ll see if the Auburn administration ever decides to claim the title.
Why not?
Their in-state rival claims plenty. Why can’t they claim this one?
We are not gonna claim it “officially” unless someone official recognizes it. The AP still says USC was the champion. The coaches poll vacated it, and until they change that we remain screwed for that one just like the 1983 one. There is one we should claim though different than those, and that is the 1913 team. Almost every SEC team claims those old championships except us. I wish we didn’t always have to be so noble.
We don’t claim 1908. Those old ones were awarded retroactively, so it’s hard to claim them. No one took teams from the South seriously in those days.
Tennessee went 9-0 in 1914 and didn’t claim a national title for it. Not sure why you think Auburn should for 1913…
AU has gone undefeated 9 times in their history.
2004 is vacant. USC cheated and lost their title.
AU can make a claim. Is it right? Who cares?
AU should have been in that game, that is a fact. I also think they would have won. Though to say that they should claim a title they did not play for is ridiculous. If it is going to be claimed, it would be by Oklahoma.
I don’t event care what the explanation is, yes they should claim it. Anyone who watched football that year knows that team was the best.
There are a lot of angles in this situation. Utah also went undefeated and had a much larger margin of victory in the Fiesta Bowl against ND than Auburn had against VT. Borges said they would have beat Utah but the bowl games don’t bear that assumption out. It should also be pointed out that USC didn’t cheat. Bush broke the rules and I will assume that Bush was the main reason that they won by 38 points.
Auburn had about the same margin against VA Tech that USC had. USC beat VT by 6 points in the regular season. AU beat them by 3.
Utah had an easy schedule. In fact, AU played/beat more bowl teams than USC/OK combined in 2004.
Utah didn’t play a single ranked team in 2004.
AU beat top ranked UT twice, UGA, LSU and VT all in the same season.
AU should claim that title.
I agree. I thought that 2004 Auburn team deserved a shot at the title.
Auburn got screwed that year. Everyone knows it.
CLAIM IT!!!!
just to spite the Big ten and the Pacific 12 .
