Mike Leach: Kentucky Derby outcome 'good example' of why expanded College Football Playoff needed
Mike Leach says Saturday’s Kentucky Derby shows why the College Football Playoff needs to be expanded. The Mississippi State head coach shared his thoughts on Twitter Saturday night, hours after Rich Strike, an 80/1 longshot, won at Churchill Downs.
That horse winning the Kentucky Derby today, is good example of why an expanded college football playoff is needed. That horse hadn’t won all the races leading up, but it got its chance and that’s what happened.

Leach noted that Rich Strike, an also-eligible horse that was added to the field Friday, had not won its most recent races. According to its race history on the Kentucky Derby website, Rich Strike had finished third, fourth and fifth in its 3 most recent races before Saturday. Seeing an 80/1 longshot come from behind to win in thrilling fashion made Saturday’s race one for the ages.
The overhead view makes Rich Strike’s comeback for the upset @KentuckyDerby win look even more incredible. 😮 #KyDerby | @ChurchillDowns pic.twitter.com/iDfkGVZS0O

Leach has long been calling for an expanded College Football Playoff field. While CFP expansion discussion usually focuses on 8- or 12-team models, Leach has suggested a 64-team field a la college basketball’s March Madness.
Reminds me of apples and …idk, maybe coconuts.

My thoughts exactly.
Guys almost every other major sport has a bigger bracket. You guys are just afraid of your teams not making the championship if you lose to some lower seed (like us)
Yep, that’s our secret fear. You nailed it.
I’m ‘afraid” (in the broadest possible sense of the word) of losing to State every year when we play ’em. Lose and we probably don’t make the Best-4 playoff. Other than that, you’re clueless about my fears.
This year’s Kentucky Derby was a Victory for the underdog. What a great race !
So, he thinks that horse racing and college football is a good comparison? This dude is weird.
So the NFL, college baseball and MLB playoffs are all horse racing? I’m very confused. What do you Leach haters not get? You guys will say anything to try to make him look stupid.
Your confusion just shows the limits to your IQ. The statement was not about the NFL, college baseball, and the MLB playoffs. It was comparing horse racing to college football. Is your ability to reason so impeded that you cannot realize that baseball can be played every day, or even every other day, football cannot. Can you also not realize that the NFL is a professional league, college is not, and they also have to attend classes? He made himself look stupid and not for the first time, just as you made yourself look stupid.
1. You can disagree with people without calling them names, don’t know if you knew that or not. In fact, it helps your argument when you have more to stand on than calling me stupid and making things up that I didn’t say
2. You probably shouldn’t put words in people’s mouths, doesn’t make you look good
3. If you actually read my comment, you would have seen that I said absolutely nothing about playing games back to back. The NFL doesn’t do that, and of course I wouldn’t suggest CFB does either. The NFL has a longer season to make up for this.
4. Please just stop trolling MSU articles, it’s getting really old.
You’ve gotta be one of the most irritating commenters on this site. I’ve gotten to the point of skipping over your comments because I know they’ll be pompous and condescending to anyone that dares disagree with you.
I saw really hard to see where you clarified your statement, but it appears you only chose to deflect to the other parts of Tidefan’s response that were not really relevant. Assertion: horse racing and college football are not comparable. Sorry, but your response about the NFL, college baseball, and MLB being horse racing just doesn’t make sense as that is not at all what Tidefan was insinuating. Please expand on what you actually meant there.

Seeing CML has advocated for a 64- team playoff, I’m not sure his vision for CFB aligns with most people’s.
