7 way-too-early predictions for South Carolina's defense in 2022
South Carolina’s defense last year made a splash with the number of takeaways, a pleasant surprise led by Jaylan Foster and the secondary.
Now the attention will shift to the defensive front, both because of departures and the 5-star linemen who are expected to grow into their recruiting hype.
Here are 7 way-too-early predictions for South Carolina’s defense in 2022.
Scoring average drops
The Gamecocks were 7th in the SEC last year giving up 24 points per game. The challenge once again is to somehow bottle up the offenses from Georgia, Clemson, Texas A&M, Tennessee and even Missouri. All those teams scored at least 30 points against the Gamecocks last season.
One way to slow down those offenses is to upgrade the pass rush after the Gamecocks were 12th in the SEC with 26 sacks a season ago. The Gamecocks will have to deliver on the talent and it will translate to a tough defense.
Zacch Pickens increases sack production
The former 5-star will develop into a notable NFL Draft pick after he passed on the draft a year ago. Pickens will chip in 7 sacks a year after he collected 4, as the Gamecocks’ defensive line lives up to the high school recruiting hype. Pickens, who has appeared in all 35 games over the past 3 seasons with 20 starts, will become an All-SEC type player.
Pickens’ play will be one of the main storylines for the Gamecocks in 2022, as he was one of the top recruits of the past 5 cycles, and an in-state product on top of that. Shane Beamer’s recipe for success is on landing and developing in-state 5-star players like Pickens.
Jordan Burch improve NFL Draft stock
With the departures of Kingsley Enagbare and Aaron Sterling, Burch has a clear opportunity to step into the edge rusher role and have a significant role on the defensive front. Burch, a third-year player, has appeared in 21 games over the past 2 seasons with 1 start. Although he hasn’t lived up to the hype of being a hometown 5-star recruit, Burch has a chance to round into form as an NFL Draft prospect.
No player has come into USC in the past few years with more hype or belief than Burch, the hometown hero from Hammond School in Columbia. The 6-6, 268-pound pass rusher was rated the No. 8 prospect overall in 2020, and as a first-time starter, Burch has every opportunity to step into his hype and expectations.
Cam Smith makes All-SEC team
Cam Smith returned to polish his game and become a more complete defensive back. Smith worked at nickel this spring, and received rave reviews. The 6-foot, 185-pounder is in line to become an NFL Draft pick next spring. He’ll become an All-SEC defensive back by midseason.
Smith has been a reliable cornerback for a couple of years, even back to the coaching change when he offered stability to the secondary. Smith battled a foot injury in August but became a starter, and in 11 games he had 3 interceptions — 2nd on the team behind Foster — and was the 6th-leading tackler with 41. Smith also had a team-high 11 pass breakups and earned 2nd-team All-SEC honors.
Clayton White emerges as a top DC
Arguably the most underrated, or overlooked, coordinator in 2021, Clayton White will be in demand entering the 2022 hiring cycle, either as a coordinator at a blue blood program, or as a head coach.
As the defense shifts to a more front 7-oriented unit in 2021, White will show his versatility and balance as a coach. Think of it this way. If he were to make a job interview-type presentation at the end of this season, White would have the ball hawk 2021 defense, and a projected dominant front this year, why wouldn’t he be an appealing hire?
Mohamed Kaba becomes a breakout candidate
As breakout candidates go, they don’t come much easier to pick out of a list than Kaba, who has garnered high respect by coaches dating to the Will Muschamp era. The junior linebacker figures to play a more significant role this season, and after he’s earned SEC All-Freshman honors from the league’s 14 coaches in 2020. Kaba has appeared in 22 contests over the past 2 seasons. A bit of foreshadowing for this season came at the end of last season when Kaba recorded 25 of his 32 stops the season’s final 6 games.
Transfer Devonni Reed makes an immediate impact
With so much focus on the defensive front, Reed will step into the Jaylan Foster role and assume the ball-hawk nature that fueled the 2021 defense. The Central Michigan transfer brings loads of experience, including 43 games for the Chippewas, and with young players on the back end, he’ll provide some stability in the secondary.
A 4-year starter, even in the MAC, is a valuable addition to the defense.
I haven’t broken down USC’s stats like this article has but what I was thinking is that there may be a talent issue.
2020 – 19th rated class.
2021 – 79th rated class.
2022 – 25th rated class.
I’m sure Carolina has some good folks on the coaching but the “Jimmies and Joes” argument would seem to be appropriate in this case.
Rankings don’t take transfer portal into account.
Yeah…I forgot about Rattler.
Rattler aside, that 79th ranked class is better than the number due to transfers.
And Rattler aside, we’re bringing in Stoegner and other proven performers.
See AFan’s comment below.
What does that have to do with transfers?
With the context of this article and playing the “transfers make us better” card, Rattler doesn’t count. Those rankings in ’20, ’21, ’22 do mean a lot. Sure there are busts and guys that are 3* that excel (i.e. Jordan Davis) but if you go back to the only real success USCjr has had around 2010 or so, look at the rankings of their recruiting classes.
Oh for sure, that’s fair. I don’t think anyone is saying we’re going to be a top 10 finish this year like those years, but I don’t think a top 25 finish is out of reach.
for me what stands out isnt about how SC D does this season, though if these guys dont produce again this year it might contradict what I am about to say. I said on an earlier article that I thought Muschamp was no longer an elite defensive mind. I think he has not been that in quite some time, several years. Didnt muschamp have these two 5 * DL for 2 years? An elite defensive guy would have gotten something out of them. Were they both over-rated out of high school? Possible but not likely. I know uga fans are elated to have him as DC but I just dont think he is that good anymore. The uga D will still be really good but it may be in spite of, rather than because of muschamp. Kirby wont allow the D to be under-coached. I guess if neither of these two guys improve much then maybe that takers away from my thoughts. we will see. I do however think the SC D will be better. Just not sure how much better.
As a Carolina fan I have to agree with you. Watching Burch and Pickens under Muschamps regime was maddening.
Pickens is a stud. Burch WAS overrated…. being a big fish in a tiny school/conference pond at Hammond elevated his ranking.
They weren’t that good under Beamer either. Neither Burch or Pickens has developed into an elite player or lived up to their 5 star status. Engbare was better than both of them combined.
That’s not true of Pickens. He progressed last year and did a decent job in the middle. He’s no Jordan Davis, but he is a projected draft pick. Comparing him to Enegbare Makes no sense. The two dudes play totally different positions. Jordan Burch I totally agree with. He has not lived up to 1/10 of the billing of who he was supposed to be. I think the level of competition he was playing against in high school made him look better than what he really was, but on the flipside you can make the argument that his high school teammate Alex Huntley, who was a much lower rated player has done a way better job for us since both arrived
Fuzzy…we totally agree on Muschamp…He “Was” a very good defensive coordinator but so was Jeremy Pruitt while he was at Florida State and at Alabama. When any team is absolutely loaded with Five ***** Elite Talent it makes the job of being a good “D” coordinator much easier. Elite players already know how to play the game very well…they only need to be “fine-tuned” so to speak.
As far as the Cocks 2022 defense is concerned…Jordan Burch has under-performed and their overall-talent-level is an issue. I hope that Rattler can light up the scoreboard enough so the “D” is not under so much pressure to win games in the 4th quarter. Go Cocks in 2022 !
Fuzzyvol,I can’t agree with you that “Muschamp no longer has coaching ability on the DEFENSIVE side. For all his misses as head coach, I realize that Kirby had Nationally #3 and then nationally #1 recruiting talent from DAY ONE onward. It’s extremely wierd that he could never win the BIG one UNTIL he got Muschamp this past year–as the defensive coordinator….. Muschamp did not DIMINISH UGA’s defensive prowess. He got them over the hump with a Defensive coaching for the ages. So, whatever you say about his HEAD-coaching ability, UGA was CLEARLY dominant on defense in 2021–and Muschamp simply has to get more credit than those before him.
Clifford…Correction, Muschamp was an analyst at Georgia during the 2021 season not the DC. He was not in much direct contact with the players. He definitely was not the Defensive Coordinator. We’ll find out how he performs in that capacity in 2022.
Certainly excited about what the defense could bring to the table in 2022, my only concerns being:
1) Injuries at key spots like DE, DB and maybe even LB due to either inexperience or lack of depth
2) Rush defense has got to be MUCH better this season for us to take another step forward, in most of our losses last year there was one alarming trend, an inability to stop the run. Front 7 while replacing some guys have loads of experience and talent overall at least in the first group.
Looking forward to this season, and I do believe more people will know who Clayton White is by seasons end, as what he did last season was phenomenal.
Valid point on the rush defense, but I’m also hoping that our offense can move the ball this year and help give our D a rest. So many games last year it felt like the D was on the field the whole game and got worn down.
Agree that the ineptitude of the offense definitely compounded the problems there last year, hopefully it will improve this season

Thats because it is waiting on your moderation.

or Co vid

Theres no curse words in there. Maybe “below average” when talking about our offensive line is enough. Who knows? Definitely not SDS.
Man just beat the Vols this year. I want to see GWhite explain it away
kirkm…Agreed. Go Cocks ! Beat Tennessee !
sorry to use this as info about georgia but after reading some info today about the guaranteed money some of the well known names in SEC who were not drafted i think bulldog fans like myself need to not get too high on winning the NC
i saw this fellow for alabama offensive guard or tackle recieved the mini guarantee of $5000 and i think jamari ellis from south carolina did not even get that much
zacoby from auburn reieved almost a pitance and this kid from auburn who played for georgia after going to the PAC as a 5 star arod was not even given a penny
so my question is how good was georgia really or was it the opponents were just not very good in 2021 since after 41 years i am elated the dogs won but too many of those names the announcers were high on on the opponents seemed not to be very able
maybe the only thing lacking in 2021 was great elite corners and safety play with the exception lewis cine was elite but this kid we took from clemson seemed lost or a step slow most of the time
i hope this transfer from west virginia will be the real deal since jackson is a tough kid but has no speed
the coach from south carolina seems like a copy of mark richt which means he is a very nice fellow and seems not to lose his cool like saban
